Softwood lumber is the number one most exported commodity from BC to the USA. Just softwood lumber alone makes up for 18% of BC’s total exports to the US. Other popular wood products include shingles and cedar shakes, plywood and veneer, and logs.
One of the most exported commodities, in general, is natural gas, which alone accounts for 11.6% of all BC origin exports sent to the United States. Natural gas as a single commodity accounts for more than any other single commodity except for softwood lumber.
There are broad categories used to describe the kinds of machinery and equipment that are most commonly transported to the USA, with electronic equipment and scientific equipment being sent frequently. Motor vehicles and car parts are also common shipments.
You may be surprised to learn that meat and prepared meats make up almost zero percentage of exported products, however, vegetables and fruits still make up a good portion of exports. Nuts, vegetable oils, bread, pastries, pasta, and cereals are also transported across the border regularly.
Unwrought Zinc tops the list of metallic minerals exported, followed by Unwrought Aluminum. Unwrought Lead, Copper Ores and Concentrates, and Molybdenum Ores and Concentrates round out the most shipped mineral products.
A fabricated metal product is one made from combining, shaping, or otherwise processing metal parts. Fabrication encompasses several metalworking processes, including rolling, punching, stamping, sintering, welding, machining and many others.
BC is home to some of the best fishing waters in the world, so it should be no surprise that fish and seafood products are continuously shipped across our southern border. Whole fish, canned fish, fillets, and frozen fish are sent to the US daily, with salmon being one of the top varieties.
Pulp, newsprint, paper, paperboard, and other kinds of paper products account for 3% of BC origin exports. Large BC companies like Fraser, Catalyst, and 11 other pulp mills are currently in operation in BC.
These make up a small percentage of BC origin exports, though chemicals like fertilizers and pesticides are still exported daily to the USA. Here’s a list of chemical products exported from Canada to countries like the USA.
The largest portion of other commodities is made of plastics and articles of plastic. These account for nearly a third of all other commodities, followed by apparel and accessories, and textile products.
